First Blood
1982
Drew did two different backgrounds for this artwork for the obvious
reason of different usage. He originally painted the one sheet
and
subsequently the studio wanted a change of proportion for other
usages.
This is another example of a first. After Drew did this piece
it became a standard way to depict an action hero in movie
advertising.
A big guy with a gun became the only way to compete with this
image.
It still remains the quintessential action hero image. Could that
be because it illustrates not only the image of a powerful individual
but
Drew's depiction also captures the spirit of the man and his struggle?
