Drew did two different backgrounds for this artwork for the obvious reason of different usage.  He originally painted the one sheet and subsequently the studio wanted a change of proportion  for other usages.
This is another example of a first.  After Drew did this piece it became a standard way to depict an action hero in movie advertising.  A big guy with a gun became the only way to compete with this image.  It still remains the quintessential action hero image.  Could that be because it illustrates not only the image of a powerful individual but Drew's depiction also captures the spirit of the man and his struggle?
