E.T. was everywhere.  No wonder Drew missed this one too.  He does recognize the art though.  Steven Spielberg did not want his baby to ever be misrepresented or to be rendered in an unflattering way.
So in the very beginning he asked Drew to design a set of "character standards" from which all subsequent pictures of E.T. would be derived. Drew did five paintings from which all other renderings of E.T. were copied. Drew recognizes this portrait of our friend as the head off of one of those original character standard paintings.
